A historical introduction is followed by an archaeological survey of ancient synagogues in Israel and illustrated reports on Second Temple period synagogues, synagogues in the Galilee,  the Beth-Shean area, the Golan, Judaea and the south, the diaspora and chapters on inscriptions and small finds from synagogue excavations.
