No other archaeological endeavor in Israel has attracted such widespread attention as the excavations at Masada carried out under the direction of Yigael Yadin in 1963–1965. Interest may have been precipitated by Josephus Flavius’ detailed account of the dramatic fate of Masada at the end of the Jewish War against the Romans (66–73/74 CE).
